GASTRIC BALLOON

Mide Balloon for Weight Control: A New Method

What is a Gastric Balloon?

A gastric balloon is a hollow balloon inserted into the stomach through the mouth using an endoscope. The balloon is then inflated, occupying a specific area in the stomach. The expansion of the balloon in this area helps patients experience an earlier feeling of fullness. However, unlike other invasive methods, the gastric balloon is removed after a certain period (usually 6 months to 1 year). During this process, patients can lose 10-20% of their excess weight, depending on their body structure.

Who is Eligible for a Gastric Balloon?

A gastric balloon may be primarily applied to adults with the following characteristics:

       Between 18-65 years old.

Unsuccessful in weight loss efforts through diet and exercise.

Individuals with a Body Mass Index (BMI) between 30-40 kg/m2.

Additionally, it can be preferred as a preoperative preparation method in situations where surgical intervention is risky. It can also be used to reduce the risk of surgery in super or super obese patients.

Who is Not Eligible for a Gastric Balloon?

The application of a gastric balloon is not recommended for individuals with the following conditions:

Those with gastritis or stomach ulcers.

Individuals who have undergone previous stomach surgery.

Those with a large hiatus hernia.

       Pregnant and breastfeeding women.

       Individuals with alcohol addiction.

       Those with bleeding disorders.

These conditions can increase the risks of gastric balloon application, so alternative methods may be more appropriate in these cases.
