Inlay and Onlay Restoration: Restoring and Protecting Tooth Loss
Inlay
and onlay restoration is a dental restoration method used as a solution between
filling and crown applications. It is preferred when there is significant loss
of dental tissue, and a filling application is insufficient, but there is not
enough damage to warrant a crown. Here is more information about inlay and
onlay restoration:
Application Stages:
●
Preparation:
The dentist cleans the decayed or damaged tooth tissue and prepares the tooth's
shape for an appropriate restoration.
● Impression Taking:
A detailed impression of the tooth is taken using a digital scanning system or
traditional impression taking methods.
● Production:
An inlay/onlay is precisely prepared using a CAD/CAM digital scanning system.
● Bonding:
The inlay/onlay is placed onto the tooth and bonded in place using a special
adhesive.
Differences Between Inlay and Onlay:
●
Inlay:
A restoration made on the cusp tips of the tooth's chewing surface, similar to
a filling.
● Onlay:
A restoration made to cover one or more cusps, providing a more extensive
coverage on the tooth's chewing surface.
Advantages:
●
Can be made using different materials, such as fiber or ceramic.
● Preferred in cases where root canal
treatment has been performed or when the natural shape of the tooth cannot be
restored.
● Restores the natural form of the tooth and
regains the bite by cleaning dental cavities.
Care and Post-Application:
●
Chewing on food is not recommended for 2 hours after application
due to the adhesive used, but drinking is permissible.
● Can be long-lasting with regular dental
check-ups and good oral hygiene.
Inlay and onlay restoration provides an effective solution for
restoring tooth loss and preserving the tooth.
