Prominent ear, often referred to as "bat ears," is an aesthetic issue that typically arises from congenital factors or genetic traits. Prominent ears involve the ears appearing more open and outwardly curved than normal. This condition can be a subject of teasing among other children, particularly during the pre-school and elementary school years, potentially leading to psychological distress in the affected child.

Prominent ear surgeries are medically termed "Otoplasty." Otoplasty aims to reshape the ear's cartilage surgically. During the procedure, the cartilage tissue is examined, corrected if necessary, and reshaped to achieve a position closer to the skull. Additionally, a small incision is made behind the ear to minimize the visibility of the surgical scar.

Otoplasty or ear surgery was performed by the ancient Indian Ayurvedic physician Sushruta in the 5th century BCE. Dr. Sushruta, along with his students, made significant advancements in ear surgery and otoplasty. His work, documented in the Sushruta Samhita, includes techniques in plastic surgery and is considered a milestone in the history of medicine. Sushruta's techniques have served as inspiration for contemporary plastic surgeons and have endured to the present day.

The external structure of the ear comprises a complex and delicate framework. The cartilage tissue has a thin, tight structure attached to the skin. Despite being a small area, the outer ear surface anatomy includes the pinna (earlobe) and the external auditory canal, forming a complex structure. Prominent ear deformity typically results from an angle issue in the lower part of the earlobe, necessitating otoplasty surgeries.
